Baker & Taylor Foundation Announces Two Scholarship Winners
- Two $3,000 Scholarships Awarded -

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - September 28, 2017- The Baker & Taylor Foundation and Baker & Taylor, a premier worldwide distributor of digital and print books and entertainment products, announced the winners of the 2017 Jean Srnecz Memorial Scholarship.

In 2009, The Baker & Taylor Foundation established an annual college scholarship in honor of former colleague, Jean Srnecz, to support the higher education of Baker & Taylor employees' children. This year, Baker & Taylor is pleased to announce they awarded two college scholarships.

The recipients, Emma Volpp and Ryan O'Neill, each received a $3,000 scholarship. These are the 14th and 15th Jean Srnecz Scholarships given to date.

"In awarding these scholarships, we're reminded of Jean's commitment to fostering the joy of learning in communities within the company and beyond," said David Cully, President of Baker & Taylor. "Both Emma and Ryan possess a spirit reminiscent of Jean's and an intellectual curiosity that she would have admired."

Emma Volpp is the daughter of Shelli Volpp, a business analyst in Charlotte. Emma plans to pursue a degree in elementary education with the hopes of eventually teaching 3rd grade. Throughout high school, Emma knew she wanted to become a teacher. Between working with children at her local country club and volunteering as a math tutor, Emma realized that helping young students learn and grow was her true passion. "I want to go above and beyond to help other students, like how my teachers in the past have helped me," she wrote in her application essay.

Ryan O'Neill is the son of Mike O'Neill, the director of engineering in Bridgewater, N.J. He plans to study civil engineering at Rowan University. Ryan's passion for engineering can be traced back to a trip to the emergency room when he was just six and needed stitches in his ear. Throughout his hospital visit, Ryan was full of curiosity, questioning and correcting the doctor. "As we were leaving the hospital, my father joked that I was beginning to show 'engineering tendencies'," Ryan explained. This early interest led Ryan to STEM classes in high school and, now, to the beginnings of an engineering career.

Jean Srnecz was on Continental Flight 3407, which crashed Feb. 12, 2009 outside Buffalo, N.Y. Jean was highly regarded within the publishing industry, not to mention very dear to Baker & Taylor. The Baker & Taylor Foundation, a nonprofit organization led by Baker & Taylor, established a college scholarship in Jean's name to annually support the education of a child of a Baker & Taylor employee.

Congratulations to our two 2017 Jean Srnecz Memorial Scholarship recipients!
