| Q: |
When will B&T be ready to accept
ISBN13s in an EDI order? |
| |
Now. B&T?s systems are ISBN-13 compatible; however, please contact Information
Services prior to placing your first ISBN-13 order so that
we can ensure that the order is successful. Once you place your
first order, make sure to check that 13-digit ISBN?s are handled
correctly by your local system. |

|
| Q: |
What do I need to do on Title Source 3 to use 13-Digit ISBN's? |
| |
Nothing, unless you use the ISBN Lookup or download marc-tagged records.
If you use ISBN lookup, you can login under the ADMIN ID and click ADMIN, ISBN Lookup Setup. Click the radio button to the left of ?Both ISBN and ISBN-10?. This allows you to check your catalog for either type of ISBN.
If you download marc tagged records, you can login under ADMIN and click ADMIN, MARC Profile List. Click on the name of the marc profile(s) you wish to edit. Under GENERAL Info, uncheck the ?Replace ISBN 13 with 10 in 020 tag?. Press UPDATE and then Close Window. If that does not work, you need to also click on Marc Tag Customization. Where it says to add 020a, be sure to change from ISBN 10 to ISBN 13.

| Q: |
Can l search the B&T web sites by ISBN-13? |
| |
All of Baker & Taylor web sites have been
updated to search on the ISBN-10 and the ISBN-13. |

|
| Q: |
Will both the ISBN-10 and ISBN-13 displayed on B&T's
web sites? |
| |
All of Baker & Taylor web sites have been
updated to display both the ISBN-10 and the ISBN-13. |
| |
|
| Q: |
Will the ISBN-10 and ISBN-13 both displayed on printed products
such as status reports, notification slips, and invoices? |
| |
Printed reports provided through any of Baker & Taylor’s
web sites will have both the ISBN-10 and ISBN-13 shown. Baker
& Taylor also provides a variety of file formats that
can be downloaded from our web sites. All of these formats will include
both the ISBN-10 and ISBN-13. |
| |
|
| Q: |
When must I begin sending orders with ISBN-13s? |
| |
Baker & Taylor will continue to accept ISBN-10
orders until the market determines that it is no longer necessary.
Please be aware that products with an ISBN-13 that begins with the
prefix 979 do not have equivalent ISBN-10s. It may not be possible
to order these titles using a non-ISBN-13 compliant system. |
| |
|
| Q: |
Will there be any changes to electronic invoicing? |
| |
Baker & Taylor will provide the same ISBN format
in the electronic invoice that was provided in the original electronic
order. If your electronic purchase order is using ISBN-10 the electronic
invoice will also contain ISBN-10. ISBN-13 order lines will receive
an ISBN-13 invoice line. |
| |
|
| Q: |
Will I need to make any changes for Content Cafe to work
with our automation system? |
| |
Content Café is just a source of data and relies on the requesting
system to format a request for data correctly. We are in the process
of completing the testing of Content Café 2. Content Café
2 has been enhanced to determine whether an ISBN-10, ISBN-13 or a
UPC has been passed in the request for data and returns the appropriate
information. Content Café 2 also provides additional data elements
like author biographies and publisher summaries. |

|
| Q: |
Will I still be able to order with my DOS-based B&T
Link? |
| |
Baker & Taylor will continue to accept orders
created by the DOS version of B&T Link. Please be aware that there
are no current plans to make this application ISBN-13 compliant. |
| |
|
| Q: |
Will older books have a 13-digit ISBN? |
| |
Baker & Taylor is not responsible for the assignment
of the ISBN-10 or the ISBN-13. We have how ever taken the effort to
assign an industry accepted ISBN-13 equivalent to all of the titles
in our database. |
| |
|
| Q: |
Can I still send BISAC orders to B&T? |
| |
Baker & Taylor will continue to accept BISAC
orders for as long as our customers believe it is necessary. We strongly
encourage all our customers to talk with their system vendors about
moving to an ISBN-13 compliant system as quickly as feasible. |

|
| Q: |
Will there be any changes to cataloging records or other MARC records
you supply? |
| |
For records created and supplied by Baker & Taylor,
the only change resulting from the expansion of the ISBN from 10 to
13 digits will be with the variable data populating the 020 (International
Standard Book Number) field. The Library of Congress, after consulting
with users of the MARC 21 Format for Bibliographic Data, began accommodating
ISBN-13 on October 1, 2004. For CIP and other bibliographic records
created after October 1, 2004 and before January 1, 2007, LC groups
pairs of ISBN 13 and ISBN 10 for the same item in repeatable 020 fields.
The ISBN-13 is provided first, then the ISBN-10. For example:
020 $a9781873671009
020 $a1873671008
Each pair of ISBNs is qualified as needed, with the pair related
to the item being described by the cataloging record provided first.
For example:
020 $a9780816052334 (hc : set : alk. paper)
020 $a0816052336 (hc : set : alk. paper)
020 $a9780816052343 (hc : v. 1 : alk. paper)
020 $a0816052344 (hc : v. 1 : alk. paper)
Beginning January 1, 2007 publishers will supply only ISBN 13.
Baker & Taylor follows the national standard
and LC’s lead in accommodating ISBN-13 and ISBN-10. Both the
13- and 10-digit ISBNs will be output on card and machine-readable
cataloging records. You will begin to see ISBN-13s in MARC from
Baker & Taylor in mid 2006. |
